What Does Failure To Thrive Mean For My Baby?

Failure To Thrive is a description of below normal growth. We find that they have this intolerance to many environmental factors which they eat, breathe, or touch every day (and usually all day). With this continuous contact, they stay in an unending state of protective reactions.

For instance, we find it not uncommon for Failure To Thrive children to be intolerant of the chemical components in the air fresheners, laundry soaps, dryer sheets, or other chemicals used in the household. When a child has these sensitivities and intolerances, they are constantly breathing or touching residue from these chemicals every day and all the time. This unending contact maintains them in a constant state of defensive responses.

Because of this unending strain on their systems, their body needs to shut down non-essential functions to have the resources to survive. For most very sensitive children, this involves shutting down the circuits which control the developmental process. This is non-essential for survival today, so by shutting it down, the body has has access to more energy for survival, but the developmental process is stuck.
